The truth is that we can reprogram ourselves. Changing our thoughts is a choice. We can be reluctant to take action when an employee is hard working and dedicated. But if he’s not well-suited to the position, it could be time for a change. Perhaps there’s another role for him to play,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or it might be time for him to move on.
In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins discusses his research for making good businesses great. He urges us to “get the right people on the bus” and then to “get them in the right seat on the bus.”
We can mistake intentions or ideas for goals. For example, “This year we’re going to improve customer satisfaction” is not a goal. It may be a great idea, but it’s not a SMART goal. Instead, “We extend our customer support hours to 8:00 p.m. starting October 1, 2010.” might be an appropriate goal for a company that wants to create raving fans.
Have you ever hired someone you thought was just terrific, only to learn that you had made a terrible decision?
1. They want to know the clear, measurable outcomes you expect them to produce.
2. They want to have the materials and tools to do the work right.
3. They want to have the opportunity to use their talents, i.e. what they do best.
4. They want to receive recognition or praise for doing good work (not just in performance reviews but often)
5. They want to know that someone at work cares about them.
6. They want someone to encourage their development.
7. They want the mission/purpose of the company to make them feel their job is important,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Do I give team members regular feedback on their performance?
Goals should always be put in writing. A simple system to review your team’s goals regularly will support you to stay in action.
A great manager empowers members of the team to continuously improve their skills.
Has each person on your team identified their areas of growth? But be careful. Many managers make mistakes here that great managers don’t. They try to shore up or transform the weakness of an employee. Consider skill and knowledge development? Of course. But don’t use training for remedial purposes! Let people build on their strengths and consider providing systems for the talented employee to remedy a weakness. For example, if your best performer is a terrible record-keeper, don’t focus on making him or her a better record-keeper. Let them keep on focusing their efforts on producing the results they produce with ease, and get creative in letting someone who’s organized effortlessly support these performers. It’s a win all around.

It would take another complete article to even begin to describe those barriers and how to overcome them to create dialogue more reliably. For this article, suffice it to say that as a leader you must be willing to go first.
Hopefully the glimpse of the magic encourages you to get on a learning journey to make that "first step" choice.
Dialogue comes from the Greek "dia",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meaning through, and "logos", meaning words or meaning. Dialogue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then could be translated as a flow of meaning. Potential Pointer: Communication is one of the most important priorities for leaders. If you want to build your communication skills, recognize the value of and learn how to create dialogue.
Dialogue is real (not a sleight of hand type thing) and extraordinarily powerful. And even though relatively few are masterful at dialogue,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it`s a skill - like magic - that can be learned.

I realize the magic metaphor isn`t perfect, there are no "tricks" to dialogue, but the potential power is real, and when it`s achieved in any group, magic definitely occurs.
As a leader your role requires that you become a skilled communicator. When most people think about communication skills they typically include presenting in meetings or groups,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], providing feedback,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], discussing topics of importance, listening intently and even emailing skills.
When developing trust
When creating understanding related to a change
When exploring problems and solutions
When coming to complex decisions
And that`s a very short list.

In the context of thinking about a communication that truly allows for "thinking together" (rather than trying to sell, advocate for or influence to a particular point of view or solution) you hopefully can see that the opportunities for dialogue are many.
Magic is a skill that can be mastered. It`s also something that can be explained. Yet, for me, magic - whether sleight of hand or elaborate process - has an aura about it; it`s something that has real power.
