Accorsi believes Collins is the key to how many veteran quarterbacks get released after June 1. If he goes to the Raiders, as many predict, it would begin a merrygoround of moves that starts with the release of Rich Gannon in Oakland and his likely signing in Tampa to play for his old coach, Jon Gruden. If Gannon goes there, veteran Brad Johnson would not be able to stay, putting another veteran quarterback with a Pro Bowl appearance on his resume on the market. But if Collins opts for Baltimore, which is pursuing him heavily after a shoulder injury to backup quarterback Anthony Wright probably will put him out of commission for most of the upcoming season, then perhaps no one else switches teams, because even though the Raiders would like to get out from under Gannon's contract, they can't go into the season without a proven passer . . . Baltimore has to do something because the only backups behind Kyle Boller are sixthround draft choice Josh Harris and undrafted free agent Brian Gaither. General manager Ozzie Newsome said, "We're not certain we'll sign another quarterback, but we have to be prepared for that possibility." No, you have to sign another quarterback . . . Priest Holmes missed several days of the Chiefs' recent minicamp, but he had the best of reasons: His father was home on a twoweek furlough before he returns to Iraq for another six months. On his first day back at practice, Holmes fumbled a handoff and immediately knocked out a string of pushups as punishment. "You drop the ball or you fumble the ball or you fall down, you do the pushups," Holmes said. "It's a reminder those things are important." . . . Fassel is not replacing offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh or last year's quarterbacks coach, David Shaw, but was imported by his old friend, head coach Brian Billick, as a senior consultant. Heads continued to roll in Cleveland, where head coach Butch Davis and aide Pete Garcia have consolidated their power under new owner Randy Lerner. Latest to go was club vice president Lal Heneghan, who was fired a week ago. He joins Carmen Policy, Ron Wolf, and Kofi Bonner as front office personnel who either quit or were fired by Davis. Pro personnel director Jeremy Green asked out of his contract to join his father in Arizona but was refused. Heneghan has been internally critical of Davis's moves, holding a strong belief that the Browns were bidding against themselves and overpaid quarterback Jeff Garcia as the replacement for Tim Couch. Just think how much power Davis might have if his team didn't go 511 last year . . . In Pittsburgh, wide receiver Plaxico Burress is being viewed as a player who is missing voluntary workouts because of a contract dispute. If they're voluntary, how can he be missing them? Burress has said he will not show up for anything but mandatory practices until training camp opens July 30 . . . The news isn't all bad in Pittsburgh, though. The return of former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau as an assistant seems to be having an effect already. Word is the Steelers were blitzing more in their recent minicamp. LeBeau is the originator of the zone blitz and an advocate of aggressive pass rushing . . . With the departure of safety Brock Marion from the Dolphins, the defensive play calling has fallen to safety Sammy Knight. The duties could still fall to Arturo Freeman, however. Freeman has replaced Marion, who signed with the Lions, but the more experienced Knight will get first shot . . . The Dolphins will return only one starter along their offensive line, left tackle Wade Smith. Smith has added 15 pounds after being one of the lightest starting tackles in the league at 295. Word is he had a party when he finally hit 300 pounds . . . Old friend Kenyatta Jones, now with the Redskins, was sentenced to one year probation and had his bizarre scalding case continued without a finding after pleading no contest to felony assault on his former roommate and administrative assistant, Mark Paul . . . Accorsi was asked if he watched the final episode of "The Bachelor" in which thirdstring Giants quarterback Jesse Palmer had to make his selection. He didn't, and joked, "I would have been much happier if he'd been studying tape." Accorsi added that Palmer had thrown well in the Giants' recent minicamp. As June 1 approaches every year, it is trumpeted as the dawn of a second bonanza of free agents, but it seldom seems to turn out that way. This year likely won't be any different. "I always think that's overblown," said Panthers general manager Marty Hurney. "There are a few good players, but teams are in better cap shape this year so I don't expect much. The most significant move will be Warner to the Giants if it happens." . . . Art Shell, the Hall of Fame offensive tackle and former head coach of the Raiders, is now working in the office of NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue, but he picked up new duties last week. The Chargers may have another rough season, with only one offensive lineman with more than two years of professional experience, but next season they have only $47.7 million on their salary cap, nearly $8 million less than the next lowest team. Even after they sign their basketful of new draftees this year, it will leave them with a ton of cap room in 2005. Of course, that's not going to help rookie quarterback Philip Rivers or headcoachonthehotseat Marty Schottenheimer much in September . . . Not many teams could survive the loss of a running back like Clinton Portis, but consider this statistic: Since Mike Shanahan became head coach in Denver in 1995, the Broncos have rushed for 20,150 yards, the most in the NFL. The amazing part is that Terrell Davis, Olandis Gary, Mike Anderson, and Portis all rushed for 1,000 yards in their rookie seasons. Although no one has emerged as the replacement for Portis, right now the top candidates are former Oklahoma running back Quentin Griffith and secondround draft choice Tatum Bell out of Oklahoma State. In his only real shot at starting, Griffith rushed for 136 yards against the Colts, but he is only 5 feet 7 inches and 195 pounds, a departure from bigger backs like Portis and Davis. Bell ran a 4.2 40 during predraft workouts and was the fastest back available in the draft. Griffith is penciled in as the starter but the competition has just begun. |
